The suggestion by critics that this is racist is nonsense. Admittedly most, probably 99% or more of, terrorist murders are committed by Arabs. However that doesn’t make the law racist, it just suggests that the Arab murderers are racist. The suggestion that it will not deter terrorists is a straw man. No-one suggests that the death penalty is a deterrent; that’s not the reason for it. There are two obvious reasons for applying the death penalty for terrorist murders. It is a sure-fire prevention of recidivism; he cannot murder again. Secondly, and most importantly, it removes the incentive for the capture of hostages to be used as bargaining chips in exchange for the release of murderers serving life sentences. The suggestion that it eliminates due process is even more ridiculous, and an insult to our legal system. Our courts will bend over backwards to ensure that the law will be applied only after intense scrutiny of the case, and only when there is not a shadow of doubt about the guilt of the defendant.
