Uman, draft evaders, and a tone-deaf gov’t. (JPost 28Aug)

It is unbelievably arrogant for Netanyahu to prioritize the survival of his corrupt coalition over the clear wishes of the majority of Israelis, especially the brave young men and not so young men who turn out regularly for duty in the reserves. I for one will never vote for Likud again, and nor will the majority of Israelis. It is bad enough that so many, though not all, Haredi refuse to join the IDF, who refuse even to serve in some other capacity to support the Israel  that supports them, but for the government to actually allocate funds to support their jaunt to Uman is outrageous. To add insult to injury the government is planning to waive the minimum restriction on cowardly draft dodgers that currently exists. They will be allowed to travel abroad even though the current law forbids this privilege for those who evade the draft.

It is time to automatically deny numerous financial benefits and other privileges to those Israeli citizens, including Arab citizens, who do not serve in any form of national service. This should include child allowances, pre-school benefits, and any other subsidies available to Israeli citizens. The significant amount of money thus saved could be applied to increase the benefits for those who do the heavy lifting by fighting in combat units. I believe that my grandchildren, many of whom do volunteer for combat units, would approve such a policy, as would the majority of Israelis.
